A harp seal pup, called a white coat, waits on a small piece of sea ice in the Gulf of St Lawrence waiting patiently for its mother to return. Harp seals are born on the sea ice in late February and nursed for 12-15 days before the mothers abandons her pup to mate and migrate northward out of the Gulf. The pups rely on fat reserves as they wait for a mother that will not return. Hunger, storms or poor ice will force them into the sea to learn how to swim and how to feed. Natural mortality is high in these harsh conditions but has become extreme, approaching 90%+ in recent years of poor ice or literally no ice formation in the Gulf. In 2017 little ice formed in the Gulf forcing pregnant females to search and search in the open waters. Many held their young and swam out of the Gulf out to the Atlantic Front looking for ice. The population of Harp seals in the Gulf of St. Lawrence may disappear with vanishing ice. // From @natgeo Story: Generous Gulf with @natgeocreative @thephotosociety // #ocean #baby #climatechange #polar #harpseal #gulfofstlawrence #canada // #PORTLAND OR join us for the story of the harp seal in Coral Kingdoms and Empires of Ice with at National Geographic Live at the Portland'5 Newmark Theatre NOV 20 at 7:30 pm. // for #moreocean follow @daviddoubilet

Schools of silversides flow like a silver river through the mangroves in Gardens of the Queen National Park, Cuba. Known as Isla de la Reina, this remote archipelago of islets, mangroves and coral reefs located fifty miles off the southern coast of Cuba is a glimpse of what the Caribbean was decades ago. Isolation and vigilant protection have created a model marine protected area that flourishes while other Caribbean reef systems are in decline. We look forward to returning to this Caribbean coral eden in December to document the global state of coral, the crisis, science and solutions . // photographed for @natgeo story Cuba's Underwater Jewels in Tourisms Path // with @natgeocreative @thephotosociety // #cuba #gardensofthequeen #marineprotectedarea #mangroves #dream #caribbean for #moreocean follow @daviddoubilet

A Goliath grouper peers from a halo of baitfish on the Zion Train artificial reef wreck off Jupiter, Florida. Goliath grouper form large aggregations on shipwrecks and other structures along the East coast of Florida from Jupiter to Boynton Beach from late August into October. These IUCN critically endangered magnificent creatures can reach 800 pounds and 8 feet long. Diving with Goliath is one of the best dives in the USA: Imagine approaching a shipwreck literally draped with dozens of resting five hundred pound fish. Goliath is currently protected in Florida but efforts are underway to reopen the fishery that nearly wiped them out. // Photographed for @natgeo GOLIATH! The School Portrait. Lined catfish are incredibly social creatures that move across the sea bottom in tight schools that form crazy shapes and patterns. I found this gang seeking momentary cover in a sunken boat near Dumaguete, Philippines. Sometimes they form perfect round spheres, pyramids or vertical stacks that reach several feet high. These cool catfish are also called poisonous catfish because, like many in the catfish group, they have a poisonous spine. The behavior and formations of this species never ceases to amaze me. // From @natgeo assignment Philippines: OceanNation. // #ocean #Philippines #CoralTriangle #funnyfaces #Catfish for #moreocean follow @daviddoubilet

Sharks and sky. A grey reef shark rises to the surface to investigate our arrival at a seamount in Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea. The sharks in Kimbe Bay are robust and healthy due to protective oversight while sharks populations throughout the world are in severe decline due to their harvest for shark fin soup. Encountering sharks on reefs throughout the world has sadly become a rare event, sharks have become ghosts in the sea. The good news: they are successful models of sharks conservation in the world that are working to protect these magnificent creatures. // Photographed for @natgeo // With @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @the_explorers_club @walindiresort // #Ocean #Shark #KimbeBay #gratitude for #moreocean follow @daviddoubilet

A rainbow colored school of anthias feed in the pulsing currents that gust like underwater winds through Verde Island Passage, Philippines. I am working on @natgeo assignment in this country I like to call the Ocean Nation that consists of + 7,000 islands. It is a place of extraordinary coral reefs, some under extraordinary pressure of trying to support +100 million people. Diving at Verde Island is like swimming through clouds of fish in a channel that is also one of the main shipping routes into Manila. The Philippines is a cornerstone of the coral triangle, a region of the Pacific known for its extreme marine biodiversity. // #ocean #coralreef #coraltriangle #rainbow #philippines for #moreocean follow @jenniferhayesig and @daviddoubilet

An American crocodile patrols the mangrove channels of Gardens of the Queen National Park Cuba. The crocodile rested on the seagrass covered bottom of the channel for minutes at a time and then rose slowly to take a breath of air and returned to the bottom to sleep again. Crocodiles are called the engineers of the mangroves because their movements create and maintain channels that enhance circulation of water and nutrients through the dense roots systems. Hello! A very curious and playful juvenile beluga whale investigates my camera in the Saguenay-St.Lawrence Marine Park near Tadoussac Quebec. These magnificent gentle creatures called the canaries in the sea burble, chirp and squeak creating a symphony of sound that makes you just stop and listen. If you are lucky they will swim up to you to share their story. Beluga whales are one of 13 species that call the St. Lawrence home and they are in trouble. Their numbers have plunged to below 1000 whales due to high infant mortality. Scientists are working feverishly to determine the cause. Photographed on assignment for @natgeo story the Generous Gulf. Caribbean reef sharks glide across a coral reef in Cuba's Gardens of the Queen, National Park. This remote marine preserve located 50 miles off the southern coast of Cuba is a living museum in the sea where reefs systems are thriving from shrimp to super predator. Cuba has successfully protected this incredible ecosystem through dedicated vigilance allowing it to become a time capsule in the Caribbean. Gardens of the Queen marine protected area is successful conservation model with global implications. See @natgeo Caribbean Crown Jewels in the nov issue. Australian sea lions play in a bed of sea grass off Southern #Australia near Hopkins Island. On occasion a sea lion would stand vertically, look around and then all the sea lions would vanish. This was our cue to leave the water. These perceptive creatures knew something we did not.........that a great white was patrolling the area looking for a meal. Australian sea lions are an endangered species that were once hunted to near extinction but now making a slow comeback. Hopkins Island is one of my favorite places on this planet. Swimming with these creatures is like swimming with a gang of golden retriever puppies that playfully pull on fin , mask and camera straps. This is not a place to leave your underwater camera on the sea floor unattended or it will be explored, investigated, moved and triggered by this curious mob of marine mammals. It is a joyful corner in the sea. #Jaws the movie, released 41 years ago June 20. The writer, my late friend and colleague Peter Benchley reached deep into people's psyche and connected with their primal fear of #sharks. Peter spent the last half of his life as a shark advocate and conservationist who worked tirelessly to dispel the myths and hysteria surrounding them. 25 years after Jaws broke box office records we joined forces with @natgeo to explore #greatwhitesharks around the world to educate, celebrate and better understand the world of sharks. Now as underwater photographers and journalists promoting shark conservation we really have to think about what an image portrays about a subject. This particular image of a #greatwhiteshark in #SouthAfrica is a non bait driven image behavior at the surface that may attract attention but it does NOT dispel fear. We must be careful and make editorial decisions that balance education, awareness and conservation. Our journalistic choices will impact public perception. Media should be truthful without dramatization. This is critical now more than ever because some Shark species have been reduced nearly 90% for a bland tasteless soup that signifies status and wealth. Sharks have become mere ghosts in the sea in many corners of the world. They need our protection to remain swimming in our oceans and not be demonized by fear and loathing generated by sensationalism @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #RespectNatur #NikonNoFilter @Seacam #ocean #sharks #jaws photo by @daviddoubilet

Sea Turtle Stretchhhhhhh..........a small hawksbill turtle stretches her front flippers as she rests on a coral head in #KimbeBay #PapuaNewGuinea. This turtle met us as we rolled off the boat and followed us the entire dive for multiple dives. Her curiosity and lack of fear worried us that she would approach the wrong free diver and end up in the local market, Kimbe Bay is a robust coral reef ecosystem cradled on the north coast of #NewBritainIsland. The deep bay is punctuated with seamounts, each with unique reefs systems and fish communities. A perfect example of what makes the #CoralTriangle so valuable to marine biodiversity.
